Sandbar Reopens

The Sandbar opened with a fresh appearance and an equally fresh tone. Now called "Ruby's Sandbar," the popular restaurant/bar's cleaner look also is reflected in its efficient and customer-focused operation. New owners Graham Whyte and his wife, Jennifer Southgate, named the bar after their six-year-old daughter, Ruby, who because she was born in Mexico, is the legal operator. Jennifer's parents, Terry and Nadine Southgate, also help, as well as Ruby's sister, Stephanie.

Along with the spruced up interior, Ruby's Sandbar has expanded hours of service. They are open six days a week, Tuesday through Saturday from 3 to 10 p.m., Sunday brunch from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and closed on Mondays. On opening night they served barbecued chicken on an organic salad and a burger-both were scrumptious.

Long-time customer, Keith Sheldon, is delighted about the Sandbar's reopening. "This place has the best margaritas. I also get a kick out of people watching there. It's the Cheers of Pescadero in more ways than one," he says. "

Drink specials are a fun new addition. You can get three drinks for only 99 pesos for the evening's featured drinks on these nights:

  • Margarita Tuesdays

  • Vino Wednesdays

  • Vodka Thursdays

  • Rum & Coke Fridays

  • Sangria Saturdays

  • Cerveza Sundays

Ruby's Sandbar will have a special grand opening evening on Monday, May 20, featuring the famous U.S. rock music of Todd Clouser's band, A Love Electric. Check it out!

Fund-Raising Event a Big Success

A fund-raising event sponsored by the Amigos de El Pescadero was held to benefit the Joven Ecologistas de Pescadero, “JEP”, an exceptional group of Pescadero middle school students on Saturday, April 27 at Mariscos el Pescadero Restaurant.

JEP teacher Paty Baum was delighted with the results. “I'd like to thank the communities of Todos Santos and Pescadero for helping us reach our fundraising goal and making it possible for 12 middle school students to realize their trip to the Isla de Espiritu Santo,” she said. “The students were overwhelmed by all the support that their project generated, and are extremely excited about their trip, which thanks to the generosity of many, will not cost them anything. The trip and all the planning efforts have been very positive for the students; I hope this energy will help to keep them focused on their studies, as most are headed to high school next fall. All have expressed interest in continuing with the Joven Ecologistas de Pescadero group, and will be invited to participate in our ongoing field service learning activities.”

Each of the JEP middle school students were interviewed and it was found that 75% of them have parents who are field hands or packing house workers who came here as migrant farm workers and have settled in Pescadero. The peak of the harvest season was given as the reason for the low parent attendance at the event (only two). Several students help their parents by joining them in the field periodically, and one is employed at Carlitos’ Restaurant as a dishwasher.

Students expressed a high level of interest and enthusiasm about their experiences in JEP and appreciation for Patty Baum. They were also asked about their career aspirations. They are interested in a variety of careers, including: chef, tour guide, marine biologist (2), teacher, veterinarian, retail business rep, illustrator-artist, farmer, and environmentalist.

Los Tocayos (meaning the acknowledgement of a relationship that arises and is enjoyed by Mexicans having the same first name) provided musical entertainment – The Tocayos are: Greg “Cowboy” Manlove and Greg Kitchel. They were joined by Fred Palm on bass. Their repertoire included several Mexican songs. They donated their tips to the JEP cause and expressed their support for Patty Baum’s work with Pescadero youth.

Raffle prizes were donated by El Tecolote Books, La Laguna Chocolates, Gypsy Style Bags, Que Rico, Pintoresca Arte Fino, Cañado del Diablo, Vivero Azteca, Cheri Rivas, Jamie Ivee Sechrist, Jovenes en Video. Special recognition also goes out to supporters: Amigos de El Pescadero, Mariscos El Pescadero, Pescadero Life Website, and Todos Santos Eco Adventures.

Pescadero Sub Delegada (mayor) attended and spoke to encourage the young participants to continue their interest in school and in protecting the environment to preserve the abundant natural beauty of this area.
Amigos de El Pescadero President Tony Garcia expressed thanks to all who attended this event and those who supported the JEP through cash donations.
